Commonly Encountered Pest Species

Gophers

Gophers are small rodents that dig holes in paddocks, fields and sometime in suburban areas. Their burrowing can damage the root systems of crops, undermine foundations, paths and driveways.

Their burrows in paddocks and fields can cause livestock to fall and injure themselves.

Gophers are social, live in colonies and breed rapidly. It's very unlikely to find one gopher but more likely a colony living in a area. They hibernate in winter and emerge in spring.

Squirrels

Squirrels are members of the rodent family and can cause property damage when they make their home in your house, garage or stored RVs. Their teeth never stop growing so they constantly gnaw on woodwork and wiring. They store food for the winter in underground cashes and nests called drays. This may mean robbing bird feeders, garden and crop plants. They breed rapidly, having two litters per year of one to six young.

Pigeons

Pigeons or rock doves are non native species to Canada. The now common Rock Pigeon was introduced to North America in the early 17th century. They inhabit and breed in building, often deficating on whatever is below nests and roosts. They are known to carry a number of diseases transmittable to pets and humans. Once a nesting sight is found they are reluctant to leave and will bring other pigeons to the area in increasing numbers.

Magpies

Magpies are a member of the corvid family and often travel in groups. They are opportunistic and may be attracted to sources of food or favorable roosting and nesting sites. They come into conflict with humans when they pick at livestock, feed on crops and gardens or when they mob pets and humans. They will often dive at pets and humans who they perceive as getting to close to nests during the breeding season. They may also outnumber pets and harass them in yards and gardens.

Crows

Crows are a member of the corvid family and can be seen in groups. They may come into conflict with humans when they harass livestock, pets or humans who get to close to their nests. They are scavengers and are attracted to easy foodstuffs. A group may descend onto crops and cause damage through feeding.

They can also be a pest when roosting above stored animal feed and vehicles, defecating on whatever is below. Their dropping have been known to cause disease and are corrosive.

Coyotes

Coyotes are elusive, moving during the hours of darkness, dusk and dawn. They usually live in packs. Coyotes can be a concern when they prey on livestock, poultry and pets. Intelligent animals, they hunt in packs and may draw pets away from their safe environment. They have been known to adapt to their environment and become less fearful of humans over time. They are know to kill more than they can reasonably consume.

Fox

Fox like coyotes, are most commonly seen at night, dusk and dawn. They eat small mammals and birds but have been known to prey on young, sick livestock, poultry and small pets. A major concern is if a fox gets access to a poultry pen or chicken coop. They are known to kill many more birds than they can consume. Once they find a food source they will return many times if not deterred.

White Tailed JackRabbit

These "Rabbits" are in fact not rabbits at all but hares. For the most part they don't cause much of a problem. Issues arise when the numbers increase, eight rabbits eating as much as one sheep. They may also devastate allotments and gardens, eating the tops off vegetables and crops, leaving the rest of the plant to rot. Similarly, large numbers may significantly damage a crop field in one night. Eating what's easy and moving on to another plant.

Wild Boar

An invasive species introduced to Canada in the 1980's, wild boar and domestic pigs escaped farms and are now considered feral. Being a introduced species and highly destructive to agricultural land and the natural ecosystem, several parts of Canada have put a bounty on wild boar hunted or trapped. Although not prevalent everywhere in Alberta the boar continue to extend their range steadily. They breed rapidly and usually move in groups.
